In October 2021, the Supreme Court ordered the government to pay compensation to families of people who died of Covid 19. But it is never easy to get government money. Many families were grappling with the procedure for the Rs 50,000 compensation. Most did not have the necessary document that proves Covid-19 infection had caused the death while some of the states were rejecting applications based on flimsy technicalities. It prompted The Reporters' Collective to undertake an extensive data-gathering exercise to find how many families had received the compensation. With the help of SAFAR, RTIs were filed with state authorities to find out the number of compensation applications received, approved and rejected.
Result: Covid-19 Compensation Tracker on The Wall of Grief. State-wise compensation data, along with official documents on the procedures of different states to grant compensation, is now hosted on the tracker page. It is the latest feature on The Wall of Grief that houses memorials of the loved ones we lost during the Covid, pan-India data on Covid deaths, research papers and news.
